Canada Announces Work Permit Exemptions for Foreign Workers

The Canadian government, through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, has issued guidance detailing categories of foreign nationals who may work in Canada without a work permit. This guidance, released on its website and cited by PUNCH Online, outlines that certain professionals and groups can qualify for exemptions based on their work nature or circumstances.

The 25 exempt categories include academics, business visitors, emergency workers, military personnel, athletes, students, and religious leaders. Specific exemptions also cover examiners, public speakers, short-term researchers, and highly skilled workers.

Despite these exemptions, eligible foreign nationals must still meet entry requirements, which may include obtaining a visitor visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). The Canadian government emphasizes that requirements vary according to the exemption and individual circumstances.
