IRCC Lists Conditions for Extending Work Permits in Canada

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced three key circumstances under which foreign workers in Canada may need to extend or update their work permits. These circumstances include changes in the type of work authorized, the employer, or the work location.

For example, a worker with an open work permit restricted from health care settings due to an incomplete medical exam can apply to remove that restriction after completing the exam. Additionally, workers who identify as a different gender than indicated on their current work permit can request an update using the Request for a Change of Gender Identifier (IRM 0002).

Workers on employer-specific permits must apply for an updated permit if their job is extended or if there are changes in terms, such as pay adjustments or new responsibilities. Importantly, workers cannot start a new role or work for a new employer until the updated permit is officially issued.
