Canada Extends Immigration Restrictions Due to Ebola Risk

The Government of Canada has announced an extension of temporary immigration measures related to the Ebola outbreak, affecting foreign nationals from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), South Sudan, and Uganda. These measures will remain in place until September 28, 2026.

The updated guidance was published on Canada's official immigration portal, indicating that while the risk of Ebola entering Canada is low, the restrictions aim to minimize this risk. Initially activated at 23:59:59 ET on May 27, 2026, the measures include suspending immigration documents for individuals who listed any of the three affected countries as their last country of residence.

This suspension applies even to those holding valid visas or permits. New and existing applications will continue to be processed, but no final decisions will be made until the restrictions are lifted.

Additionally, a rule effective July 20, 2026, prohibits any foreign national who has been in the DRC within 21 days prior to travel from boarding a flight to Canada. The measures are subject to expiration on September 28, 2026, unless repealed earlier.
