Canada Offers Immigration Relief for Disaster Victims

Canada has implemented temporary special immigration measures to assist foreign workers, students, and visitors whose immigration status has been disrupted by natural disasters. These measures, effective from April 1, 2026, to November 30, 2028, allow eligible temporary residents up to six months to apply for status restoration, compared to the usual 90-day period.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced that individuals directly affected by disasters such as wildfires, storms, floods, hurricanes, and earthquakes are eligible, provided they had valid temporary resident status at the time of the disaster. Applicants must submit a signed attestation detailing the disaster's impact, include the code “NaturalDisaster2026,” and provide supporting evidence.

Students can pause their studies without penalty if their educational institutions close due to disasters. The measures aim to give affected individuals additional time to regularize their immigration status while managing the aftermath of significant natural events.
