Canada Lists 11 Categories for Work Permit Applications

The Canadian government has announced that certain foreign nationals can apply for work permits directly at a Canadian port of entry (POE) instead of submitting applications prior to travel. According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), while pre-travel applications are preferred, eligible individuals and their family members may apply upon arrival.

To qualify, applicants must be from a visa-exempt country or territory. The IRCC has identified 11 specific categories of eligible travelers, including: US nationals or permanent residents, individuals re-entering Canada after visiting the US or Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, French citizens flying directly from Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, crew members arriving by boat, passengers on flights stopping in Canada to refuel, and others involved in specific transit or diplomatic roles.

The guidance emphasizes that eligibility conditions apply to both the principal applicant and accompanying family members, and it is advised that travelers confirm their eligibility before traveling, as applying at the border is an exception.
