Canada’s IRCC Implements New Visitor Entry Screening Rules

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has disclosed new operational details regarding visitor entry into Canada, revealing a multi-layered screening system that employs over 40 national policy criteria to evaluate visa requirements. This announcement was made in a post on IRCC’s X handle and is part of the 2026 Deputy Minister transition briefing.

The criteria include safety and security assessments, document integrity, economic and bilateral factors, and migration trends. Individual applicants for Temporary Resident Visas (TRVs) will undergo manual assessments based on personal indicators such as travel history and financial capacity.

To manage the anticipated 5.8 million visitor applications, IRCC has implemented tools like the Global Risk Framework and biometric enrolment, processing nearly 3.5 million records annually. The new measures aim to tighten screening while still facilitating legitimate travel for visitors contributing to Canada.
