Journalists for Human Rights Pursues Partnership with PUNCH

Journalists for Human Rights (JHR), a Canada-based media development organization, expressed interest in collaborating with PUNCH Newspapers to provide training in human rights journalism. During a visit to PUNCH's headquarters in Magboro, Ogun State, JHR board chair Michael Cooke emphasized the importance of understanding local contexts in journalism.

He noted that JHR aims to empower journalists and the public regarding their rights through comprehensive training and networking. Cooke highlighted findings from a survey indicating that 71% of Nigerian journalists feel inadequately prepared for digital journalism, which raises concerns about the training available.

He also pointed out the need for greater capacity in investigative journalism and emphasized safety and security issues faced by journalists, particularly women. PUNCH Metro Editor Joel Nwokeoma responded to Cooke's statistics, indicating an ongoing dialogue about the challenges in the Nigerian journalism landscape.
