Cardinal Onaiyekan Says Tinubu Dismisses Bishops' Economic Warnings

Cardinal John Onaiyekan, Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, has publicly criticized President Bola Tinubu's response to concerns raised by Nigeria's Catholic bishops about the nation's economic condition. During a television interview Friday on Arise News, Onaiyekan stated that Tinubu dismissed warnings presented during a recent State House meeting between the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria and the president.

The cardinal alleged that officials surrounding the president are providing him with an unrealistically positive assessment of Nigeria's situation. Onaiyekan said this disconnect between what the president hears from his inner circle and the actual struggles facing ordinary Nigerians poses a significant problem.

He indicated the bishops felt compelled to present what they regard as an accurate picture of the nation's condition during their Tuesday meeting with Tinubu. Onaiyekan also took issue with remarks Tinubu made suggesting that politics operates without ethical boundaries.

The cardinal stated this position is fundamentally incorrect and reflected a concerning detachment from how Nigerians are experiencing economic hardship. According to Onaiyekan, members of the bishops' conference expressed worry that the administration is primarily focused on winning the 2027 elections through whatever means available, rather than addressing immediate national challenges.

The tension between the church leadership and the presidency reflects broader disagreements over how the government characterizes Nigeria's economic trajectory. While Tinubu has maintained that political processes remain fair and that institutions like the electoral commission function neutrally, the bishops' delegation conveyed a different assessment during their meeting.

Onaiyekan's public statements in the days following that meeting suggest the bishops' message did not receive the reception they anticipated from the president.
