Cardinal Onaiyekan Stands Firm Against Presidential Criticism Over Meeting Disclosure

Cardinal John Onaiyekan, the retired Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, has rejected criticism from the Presidential office over his decision to make public statements about a meeting with President Bola Tinubu and a delegation of Catholic bishops. In a video statement circulated midweek, Onaiyekan said age and government disapproval would not silence him on matters affecting Nigeria.

The dispute emerged after Onaiyekan disclosed details from a July 28 gathering between the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria and the President. Days later, Temitope Ajayi, a senior media aide to Tinubu, characterized the disclosure as an improper use of clerical standing, sparking the broader exchange.

Ajayi subsequently appeared on broadcast media to clarify that his remarks were not meant to demean Onaiyekan or the Catholic Church itself, and suggested the disagreement should not occupy excessive public attention. However, Onaiyekan countered that he made the television appearance to relay collective concerns raised by the bishops during their meeting with the President, not to satisfy the government or individual officials.

The cardinal, now 82 years old, stated plainly that neither embarrassment nor intimidation would deter him from speaking freely. He emphasized that his right to address national issues reflects the responsibility he carries as a representative voice for Catholic leadership in Nigeria.

The exchange underscores a tension between clerical authority to comment on governance and executive sensitivity to public disclosure of private meetings.
