In the first quarter of 2026, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) reported a significant increase in financing statements registered in Nigeria, with a total of 27,170 statements, reflecting a 53.9% year-on-year rise from 17,650 in Q1 2025. The value of these registrations surged to N2.55 trillion, a remarkable increase of 628.8% from N350.58 billion in the same period the previous year.

Financing statements are essential records of financing interests registered by creditors against debtors, indicating secured financing arrangements. Microfinance banks led the registrations with 22,977 statements, up from 16,600 in Q1 2025.

Deposit money banks recorded 2,870 registrations, a sharp increase from 272 a year earlier. Finance houses and non-bank financial institutions also saw increases, while development finance institutions recorded minimal activity with only one registration in March 2026, compared to one in the entire first quarter of 2025.
