CBN Reports $6.3bn Portfolio Inflows as Diaspora Remittances Hit $950m

Nigeria's foreign exchange reserves strengthened through portfolio investments and remittances in 2026, reducing central bank intervention pressure.

Nigeria's foreign exchange position has strengthened considerably via diverse income sources, as disclosed by the Central Bank of Nigeria this week. From January through August 2026, net foreign portfolio investment inflows totaled roughly $6.3 billion, according to CBN Deputy Governor Muhammad Sani Abdullahi.

Such inflows, alongside movements from the private sector and remittances sent by diaspora members, have lessened the central bank's burden regarding direct market intervention. Remittances from abroad proved instrumental in achieving these improvements.

During July, transfers routed through international money operators amounted to $950 million, the CBN indicated. With a monthly target of $1 billion in remittance receipts, the central bank continues pursuing reforms aimed at strengthening currency market stability.

That same month witnessed total forex inflows of $10.82 billion, of which approximately 68 percent derived from autonomous channels as opposed to central bank reserves. This enhancement in foreign exchange conditions mirrors initiatives to reform Nigeria's currency trading system.

Abdullahi underscored that dollar supply origins have transformed, with portfolio purchases and private remittances assuming more prominent positions relative to past years. He stressed that pricing clarity and reliable transaction mechanisms remain vital for reducing gaps separating official from parallel market quotations.

The CBN also indicated that financial institutions ought to bolster their balance sheets and allocate resources toward financial technology development. Whilst portfolio flows present risks of reversals, the wider growth in autonomous forex provision has diminished the economy's reliance on central bank involvement, enabling reserves preservation alongside market equilibrium.
