China Imports $2.3bn in Nigerian Goods in Six Months

The Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, Zhou Hongyou, announced that China imported almost $2.3 billion worth of Nigerian goods in just six months, reflecting an approximately 80 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025. Total trade between Nigeria and China surged by 75 percent year-on-year to $18 billion.

Zhou highlighted that China's zero-tariff policy for African countries with diplomatic relations presents Nigeria with a significant opportunity to enhance its exports. Historically reliant on petroleum, Nigeria's trade relationship with China is evolving beyond traditional patterns.

Zhou also noted that 2026 marks 55 years of formal diplomatic relations between Nigeria and China, urging deeper cooperation in various sectors including education, culture, and technology. The remarks were made during the Nigeria-China Food Festival, where cultural exchanges were showcased, and Nigerian officials emphasized the economic potential of the food industry in tourism and job creation.
