Chelle, Home-based Eagles Under Fire After Disgraceful Exit from CHAN

Coach Eric Chelle and the home-based Eagles are facing heavy criticism after their disappointing exit from the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024. The team crashed out following a thrashing by Sudan, with coach Chelle and the players being blamed for the disgraceful performance.

Former Super Eagles defender Ifeanyi Udeze criticized the team, stating that they were not good enough to be called Super Eagles and had failed to seize the opportunity given to them. Journalist Eze Chukwu suggested that Chelle should have led the team as a qualified coach, expressing concern about the impact of the scandalous outing on the upcoming World Cup qualifier.

Despite the backlash, Chelle remains in charge of the team, while former Super Eagles defender Brown Ideye returned to play in the domestic league and defended the coach on social media. Nigeria is set to face Rwanda and South Africa in crucial World Cup qualifiers in September.
