Chelsea Blames Maresca's Exit for Disappointing Season

The issues began in autumn 2025 when Maresca informed club officials of his desire to succeed Pep Guardiola at Manchester City at the end of the season. Despite having a long-term contract with Chelsea, Maresca abruptly resigned on January 1, 2026, feeling let down and focused on the opportunity at Manchester City.

Chelsea confirmed that a confidential settlement was reached with Manchester City, which included compensation for Maresca. The club expressed regret over the managerial change mid-season but felt it was necessary to protect the players and the club's interests.

Looking ahead, Chelsea expressed confidence in new manager Xabi Alonso, describing him as a professional with the highest integrity and capable of restoring the club's success.
