China to Eliminate Tariffs for 53 African Nations

President Xi Jinping announced that China will remove tariffs for 53 African nations effective May 1. This decision, confirmed by Chinese state media, aims to reshape trade flows between China and Africa.

The zero tariff policy will apply to all African countries except Eswatini, which recognizes Taiwan. China considers Taiwan a part of its territory and has repeatedly stated its intention to bring it under control.

Last year, China introduced a zero tariff policy covering imports from 33 African countries, and officials indicated that this new arrangement would expand to include more African diplomatic partners. This announcement coincides with a time when African governments are reassessing their global trade relationships, particularly after former U.S.

President Donald Trump imposed sweeping tariffs worldwide, triggering shifts in trade dynamics. The zero tariff deal was unveiled as African leaders convene in Addis Ababa for the annual African Union summit.
