Church of England Names First Female Archbishop of Canterbury; Sarah Mullally Appointed

The Church of England has appointed its first female Archbishop of Canterbury nomination committee to find a successor to Justin Welby, who stepped down earlier due to an abuse scandal. Sarah Mullally, 63, will become the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury, succeeding Welby.

Mullally, a former nurse, expressed her acknowledgment of the huge responsibility in her new role and stated she felt a sense of peace and trust in God to carry it out. The UK government approved King Charles III's nomination.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomed Mullally's appointment, highlighting its profound importance to the country. Welby resigned following a report that found the Church of England covered up a serial abuse case from the 1970s.
