Civil Rights Group Rates CJN Kekere-Ekun Low Over Lack of Judicial Reforms

The civil rights organization Tap Initiative has given Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun a low rating for her lack of judicial reforms in her first year in office. The group criticized the CJN for failing to deliver urgent reforms despite high expectations upon assuming office in August 2024.

Tap Initiative's Executive Director, Martin Obono, highlighted the CJN's reliance on rhetoric and moral persuasion rather than taking concrete actions for judicial modernization. The group expressed concerns about the lack of strong disciplinary measures for judges and warned of potential loopholes in new policy guidelines that could be exploited in the lead-up to the 2027 general election.

Tap Initiative urged the CJN to take bolder steps and implement urgent reforms to leave a meaningful legacy in the Nigerian judiciary.
