Rights Group Scores CJN Kekere-Ekun’s First Year Low

Civil rights group Tap Initiative has given a low score to Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Kudirat Kekere-Ekun's first year in office. The group noted that despite assuming office in August 2024, CJN has not made significant strides in reforming the judiciary.

They criticized her leadership style, which they believe relies more on speeches and moral persuasion rather than implementing structural reforms. The group highlighted the lack of concrete disciplinary actions against erring judges, emphasizing the need for judicial accountability.

Tap Initiative also pointed out the absence of clear guidelines to address concerns such as the misuse of political cases. They warned that unless urgent action is taken, CJN risks leaving a legacy of inertia in the judiciary.

The group stressed the importance of visible actions in the next twelve months to determine the future trajectory of Nigeria's judiciary.
