CJN Prohibits 'Barrister' Title at Supreme Court Engagements

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, issued a directive on July 13, 2026, banning the use of the title "Barrister" as a prefix to names in all official engagements at the Supreme Court. This memorandum, signed by Chief Registrar Kabir Akanbi, was addressed to litigation staff, legal practitioners, court registrars, and lawyers, stating that the use of the title is inappropriate and inconsistent with the professionalism expected at the Supreme Court.

The directive took immediate effect, requiring all affected individuals to cease using the title in official correspondence, records, documents, identity materials, and any other official engagements. Supervisory officers were instructed to enforce compliance with this directive.

This decision follows a recent caution from the Council of Legal Education regarding prospective lawyers presenting themselves as qualified before being formally called to the Nigerian Bar, which could undermine the legal profession's dignity.
