CJN Bans 'Barrister' Title in Supreme Court Engagements

Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, has issued a directive banning the use of the title "Barrister" by lawyers, court officials, and litigation staff during official engagements at the Supreme Court. This memorandum, dated July 13, 2026, and signed by Chief Registrar Kabir Akanbi, mandates that all affected personnel discontinue the use of the title in official correspondence, court records, and related documents.

The measure is intended to maintain the standards of professionalism expected within Nigeria's highest court. Compliance with this directive is mandatory and takes immediate effect, with department heads instructed to enforce adherence among their staff.

The initiative seeks to promote uniformity and professionalism in official communication and court administration. This directive follows a warning from the Council of Legal Education regarding the inappropriate use of legal regalia by prospective lawyers prior to their formal call to the Nigerian Bar, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the dignity of the legal profession.
