Coalition Demands NNPCL Accountability for $3.5 Billion

A coalition has called for the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to account for $3.5 billion reportedly spent on refinery rehabilitation projects. During a press conference in Abuja, coalition leader Dr.

Tekem Umukoro criticized the NNPCL for a lack of transparency and repeated failures in Nigeria's refinery sector. The group expressed concerns following a new agreement with Sanjiang Chemical Company Limited for the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries, which have previously consumed significant funds without clear results.

The coalition highlighted that the Port Harcourt refinery alone reportedly consumed $1.5 billion, with additional commitments for the Warri and Kaduna refineries. They demanded detailed accounts of previous contracts and milestones achieved, questioning the effectiveness of past rehabilitation efforts.

The coalition urged President Bola Tinubu to direct anti-corruption agencies to investigate financial misconduct linked to past refinery contracts and called for a comprehensive audit of refinery expenditures from 2015 to date.
