Mokwa Community Urges Government Action Against Flood Risk

The community in Mokwa, Niger State, has raised alarms regarding an impending flood and is calling for quick intervention from both state and federal governments. This concern arises following a devastating flood in late May of the previous year, which resulted in the loss of at least 50 lives, particularly among children, and caused property damage valued at N200 million, including the destruction of houses and farmland.

The community is currently facing heavy rainfall, leading to water accumulation in areas previously affected by floods. Dr. Moham Hussaini, the Director of Information Services at the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), assessed the situation in Mokwa and noted the need for urgent action.

He emphasized the importance of reopening blocked railway routes to facilitate the flow of floodwaters into the River Niger. Community members have begun relocating their properties to mitigate the impact of the anticipated flooding.
