Rainstorm in Mokwa Claims Two Lives, Destroys Buildings

A severe rainstorm struck Mokwa, Niger State, on Sunday night into Monday morning, leading to the destruction of numerous buildings and the reported deaths of two individuals, including a mother and her five children who were hospitalized. Eyewitnesses attributed the disaster to deforestation and unchecked land degradation.

Alhaji Jibrin Abdullahi Muregi, the chairman of Mokwa Local Government, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview, describing the situation as catastrophic. He urged the state government and relevant authorities to intervene immediately.

Dr. Abdullahi Hussaini, the director general of the Niger State Emergency Management Authority, also confirmed the incident and stated that assessments were ongoing.

As of the latest reports, the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths of the two individuals remain unverified until officials reach Mokwa for further evaluation.
