Nigeria Faces Surge in Communicable Diseases, NCDC Reports

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported alarming statistics regarding communicable diseases in Nigeria, revealing that 1,738 lives were lost due to outbreaks such as diphtheria, cholera, and lassa fever. As of December 14, the NCDC noted that 9,164 Nigerians were affected by various infectious ailments, with lassa fever alone accounting for 1,097 cases and 201 deaths across 21 states and 103 local government areas.

Dr. Jide Idri, the Director-General of NCDC, made these revelations during a three-day stakeholder workshop in Abuja aimed at enhancing Nigeria's public health emergency response.

The workshop, organized in collaboration with UNICEF and WHO, focused on identifying bottlenecks in the health system and strengthening the country's health security framework. Dr.

Idri highlighted the persistent challenges in coordination, data integration, and workforce readiness, urging for a collective effort to improve early detection and response capabilities to infectious diseases, which thrive in Nigeria due to poor hygiene, poverty, and inadequate healthcare facilities.
