Senators Prioritize State Police Amid Nigeria's Insecurity

Senators from the 10th National Assembly have prioritized the establishment of state police as part of constitutional amendments, citing worsening insecurity in Nigeria as a pressing concern. Opeyemi Bamidele, the Senate leader and deputy chairman of the constitutional review committee, stated that the issue of state police cannot be downplayed, especially given the ongoing security challenges threatening lives and property across the country.

Abba Moro, the Senate minority leader from the People's Democratic Party (PDP), dismissed suggestions to abandon the constitutional amendment process, advocating for a fast-tracked approach to address urgent issues related to state police. Ali Ndume, the chairman of the Senate committee on arms, emphasized that security remains a primary responsibility of the government and that establishing state police is essential for constitutional reform.

The discussions reflect a consensus on the need for local governance and grassroots security measures to combat the escalating insecurity in Nigeria.
