Nigerian Senate Approves State Police Framework Bill

On Wednesday, the Nigerian Senate approved a constitutional amendment bill that paves the way for the establishment of state police services across the country, marking a historic reform in Nigeria's security framework. The bill, which received overwhelming support from lawmakers, allows state governors to appoint heads of state police, subject to confirmation by state houses of assembly.

This amendment aims to create a dual police structure, enabling state police to operate alongside the existing federal police system. The legislation addresses long-standing concerns regarding the federal monopoly on policing and aims to enhance the response to evolving security challenges, such as terrorism and banditry.

However, lawmakers included safeguards to prevent potential political misuse of state police, ensuring that they cannot arrest or investigate individuals based solely on political criticism. The Senate, led by President Godswill Akpabio, opted for a manual voting process after abandoning plans for electronic voting due to technical difficulties, emphasizing transparency in the legislative process.
