Cooking Gas Prices Surge to N2,000/kg in Lagos

The price of cooking gas in Lagos has reached N2,000 per kilogram, with major retail outlets selling it at N1,700 per kilogram. This surge has resulted in long queues at filling stations as families revert to using charcoal and firewood.

The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) reported that the prices for various cylinder sizes have sharply increased, with a 2kg cylinder costing N3,400, a 6kg cylinder N10,200, and a 12.5kg cylinder N21,250. The situation has led to significant hardship for millions of Nigerian households and small food vendors.

NALPGAM cautioned that the rising prices could trigger public unrest and undermine government efforts to promote clean cooking energy. Energy analyst Aisha Moham highlighted that the increase in LPG prices could force families back to using firewood and charcoal, which are linked to chronic respiratory diseases.

Despite Nigeria's vast gas reserves, many citizens lack access to clean cooking fuel.
