Cooking Gas Prices Approach N2,000/kg Ahead of Sallah

As the Sallah celebrations approach, the price of cooking gas in Nigeria is nearing N2,000 per kilogram, with variations across different regions. Recent surveys indicate that prices have risen from below N1,000 to between N1,500 and N1,800 in various parts of the country.

In Ogun, prices are reported at N1,600 to N1,700, while Lagos and Abeokuta see prices ranging from N1,800 to N2,000 per kilogram. The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) has raised alarms about the erratic supply and rising costs of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), warning that the situation could lead to scarcity and exacerbate hardships for millions of Nigerian households.

The association describes the current state as sad and pathetic, noting that many families may revert to using firewood or charcoal for cooking due to the unaffordability of LPG. They emphasize that failure to address this crisis could lead to increased food inflation and job losses in the small-scale LPG retail business.
