COREN and NBRRI Collaborate with CIFCFIN on Engineering Safety
The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and the Nigeria Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) have partnered with the Chartered Institute of Forensics and Certified Fraud Investigators of Nigeria (CIFCFIN) to combat engineering failures in Nigeria. This collaboration was announced during the induction of the inaugural cohort of Certified Forensic Engineering Failure Investigators (CEFFI) in Abuja.
Dr. Iliyasu Gashinbaki, President of CIFCFIN, emphasized that engineering failures can lead to loss of lives, public resources, and institutional trust, often stemming from issues like defective design and fraud. He cited a 2026 engineering study that reported 111 validated building collapses from 2015 to 2025, resulting in 321 deaths and 344 injuries.
Additionally, fire-related losses from 2022 to 2025 were estimated at ₦4.6 trillion. Gashinbaki called for a shift towards evidence-based accountability in engineering practices.
COREN President Engr. Prof. Sadiq Zubair Abubakar supported this initiative, aiming for safer infrastructure and better stewardship of public resources.
