Cleric Admits to Receiving Funds for Coup Prayers

Sheikh Sani Abdulkadir, an Islamic cleric, is currently on trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where he admitted to receiving money for prayers intended to ensure the success of a coup attempt against President Bola Tinubu. However, he asserted that he warned the alleged plotters that their plan would ultimately fail.

During the proceedings, it was revealed that Abdulkadir was approached by Colonel Maaji and an intermediary named Sanda, who sought spiritual support for the coup. Abdulkadir advised them that the operation would fail.

The court proceedings included disputes over the admissibility of statements made by the defendants, with objections raised regarding the voluntariness of these statements and claims of coercion. The trial has been adjourned until May 12, as the judge ruled in favor of a single joint trial for the defendants.
