Coup Suspect Zekeri Umoru Testifies in Abuja Court

Zekeri Umoru, a defendant in a coup plot against President Bola Tinubu, testified in an Abuja court, stating he was misled regarding the alleged treason agenda. During the trial presided over by Justice Joyc Abdulmalik, Umoru claimed he was unaware of the plot and believed he was simply conducting business.

He detailed interactions with Inspector Ibrahim, who allegedly introduced him to Colonel Moham Aji, a private businessman. Umoru admitted to receiving substantial sums of money from Aji, including amounts between 100,000 and 120,000 naira, and a total of 8.8 million naira deposited in a Zenith Bank branch.

He expressed growing suspicions about the legitimacy of these payments. The prosecution presented video evidence of Umoru explaining his contacts and financial dealings, while the defense requested time to study the evidence.

The case was adjourned until May 11-13, 2026, as the trial continues to scrutinize the actions of various security officials and civilians involved.
