Court Restricts Media from Coup Plotters' Trial Coverage

On Monday, a Federal High Court in Abuja issued an order prohibiting journalists from covering the bail proceedings of six defendants accused of attempting to orchestrate a coup against President Bola Tinubu's administration. The order was given by Justice Joyc Abdulmalik, who directed that journalists must leave the courtroom shortly after the trial commenced.

The six defendants, who were arraigned last Wednesday, include Moham Ibrahim Gana, a retired Major General; Erasmu Victor, a retired Navy Captain; Ahm Ibrahim, a police inspector; Zekeri Umoru, an electrician; and Bukar Goni Abdulkadir Sani, an Islamic cleric based in Zaria. The Federal Government has alleged that these individuals were involved in a failed coup attempt and are now standing trial.

The court's decision to restrict media access has heightened public interest in the proceedings.
