Court Orders Speedy Trial for Alleged Coup Plotters

On April 24, 2024, the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Joyc Abdulmalik, ordered the expedited trial of six individuals accused of conspiring to overthrow President Bola Tinubu's administration. The suspects, including Moham Ibrahim Gana, a retired Major General, and other military and civilian personnel, face 13 counts, including treason and terrorism.

The trial is scheduled to begin on April 29, 2024, with hearings for bail applications set for April 27. Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi informed the court that the prosecution is ready to proceed.

Justice Abdulmalik ruled that the trial would commence before considering bail applications. The defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges, which include conspiracy to wage war against the state.

The case has drawn significant attention, with reports indicating that at least 40 suspects, including retired military personnel, have been arrested in connection with the alleged coup plot.
