Court Denies El-Rufai Bail on Serious Corruption Charges

On April 21, 2026, a Kaduna State High Court ruled against a bail application filed by former Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who is facing serious corruption charges. Justice D.H.

Khobo stated that the gravity of the allegations raised concerns about possible interference with ongoing investigations. The case, instituted by the Federal Republic of Nigeria against El-Rufai, involves offenses related to corruption and economic sabotage.

The court found that the circumstances did not favor granting bail at this stage, despite El-Rufai's arguments for bail based on his health concerns and claims of being a flight risk. The court dismissed these health claims, noting a lack of medical evidence.

Consequently, Justice Khobo ordered El-Rufai to remain in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) until the trial, which is set to commence on June 1-4, 2026.
