Court Rejects El-Rufai's Defense in Phone Interception Case

The Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed the no-case submission filed by former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai against charges from the Department of State Services (DSS) concerning alleged phone interception. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik made this ruling on Monday, agreeing with the prosecution that a prima facie case had been established.
The charges against El-Rufai were filed by the DSS on February 16, 2026, alleging that he unlawfully intercepted the phone communications of National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu. The former governor denied the charges, which included an admission made during an appearance on Arise TV’s Prime Time programme on February 13, 2026.
Justice Abdulmalik ordered El-Rufai to enter his defense and adjourned the case until November 25, 2026. The DSS's charges are based on Section 12(1) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024.
