Court Dismisses Sowore's Suit Against DSS and Meta

On Thursday, a Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Moham Umar, dismissed Omoyele Sowore's fundamental rights enforcement suit against the Department of State Services (DSS) and Meta Platforms Incorporated. The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1887/2025, alleged that Meta acted on instructions from the DSS to remove a Facebook post made by Sowore and deactivate his account.

The post, published on August 26, 2025, referred to President Bola Tinubu in a manner Sowore claimed was criminal. Justice Umar ruled that Sowore's allegations of a breach of his right to a fair hearing were unfounded, explaining that constitutional rights apply to judicial proceedings and not actions taken by non-judicial bodies.

The court also held that the DSS's complaint regarding Meta's decision did not violate Sowore's rights to freedom of expression and association. Ultimately, the court dismissed the case for lack of merit and awarded N1.5 million in costs against Sowore, with N500,000 allocated to the DSS and Meta.
