Court Fines EFCC N500,000 Over Emefiele Trial Delays

On Tuesday, a high court in Maitama, Abuja, presided over by Judge Hamza Muazu, imposed a fine of N500,000 on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for delays in the trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele. The court noted that the prosecution failed to produce witnesses for the resumed hearing.

Emefiele faces 20 counts of amended charges, including alleged criminal breach of trust, forgery, abuse of office, and conspiracy to obtain money under false pretenses, involving the alleged misappropriation of N6.23 million from the Guis fund during the 2023 general elections. The prosecution's counsel, Abba Moham, explained the absence of a key witness, Deputy Commissioner of Police Elohor Edwin Okpoziakeo, despite prior notification.

The defense counsel, Matthew Burkaa, opposed further adjournments, citing the prosecution's failure to manage the case effectively. The court ultimately adjourned the trial to April 27-28, 2024, while retaining discretion to grant adjournments in the interest of justice.
