Court Fines EFCC N500,000 for Delaying Emefiele Trial

On Tuesday, a Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Judge Hamza Muazu, imposed a fine of N500,000 on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for delaying the corruption trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele. The EFCC was unable to present a scheduled prosecution witness, which stalled the proceedings.

The defense counsel, led by Matthew Burkaa, strongly opposed the EFCC's request for adjournment, arguing that the prosecution had already received multiple adjournments since the case began and that further delays were unfair. Judge Muazu acknowledged the defense's concerns but noted that the court has discretion to allow adjournments in the interest of justice.

The trial, which involves multiple allegations against Emefiele, including abuse of office and fraud, is set to continue on April 27, with the EFCC responsible for ensuring the smooth progress of the trial.
