Court Denies Sowore's Long Adjournment Request in Trial

On Monday, the Federal High Court in Abuja, under Justice Moham Garba Umar, denied Omoyele Sowore's application for a long adjournment in his trial concerning allegations of defaming President Bola Tinubu. Sowore, a member of the African Action Congress, sought to postpone the trial for two months due to personal matters, as stated by his lawyer, Reuben Adakol.

However, the Department of State Services (DSS) counsel, Akinlolu Kehind, opposed this request, highlighting that there had been ten previous adjournments and arguing that further delays would frustrate the criminal trial process. Justice Umar emphasized adherence to earlier court orders and scheduled the next hearing for July 16, where Sowore's first witness, Deji Adeyanju, is expected to continue providing evidence.

The trial revolves around Sowore's social media comments, which allegedly called President Tinubu a criminal, raising issues of citizens' rights to criticize government officials.
