Orient Petroleum MD Nwawka Sentenced to 14 Years for Fraud

Nnaemeka Nwawka, the Managing Director of Orient Petroleum Resources PLC, was sentenced to 14 years in prison by Justice O. M.

Anyachebelu of the Anambra State High Court for his involvement in a N25 billion fraud scheme. Alongside him, Jude Anniekwu and Cyril Sage Nebefeif were also convicted.

The court found them guilty of stealing and receiving gratification through a series of fraudulent financial transactions between 2012 and 2013. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) prosecuted the case, presenting four witnesses and numerous documents that detailed contracts allegedly awarded to companies linked to the defendants.

The court concluded that the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt, ordering the defendants to refund N140.9 million to Orient Petroleum Resources PLC. The evidence presented showed a pattern of diversions of company funds and questionable contract awards, raising suspicions about the legitimacy of the transactions.
