Ex-NEXIM Bank MD Sentenced to 490 Years in ₦2.4 Billion Fraud Case

The former Managing Director of NEXIM Bank, Robert Orya, has been sentenced to a total of 490 years in prison for his involvement in a ₦2.4 billion fraud case. The judgment was delivered by Justice F.E.

Messiri on February 5, 2026, following a long trial initiated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Orya was found guilty on 49 charges related to fraud and abuse of office during his tenure at the bank from 2011 to 2016.

The court handed down a 10-year sentence for each count, totaling 490 years. Orya was accused of misusing his position to divert public funds and engage in corrupt financial misconduct.

The EFCC's prosecution led by counsel Samuel Ugwuegbulam presented sufficient evidence to prove Orya's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. This conviction is part of the EFCC's efforts, under Chairman Ola Olukoyede, to pursue corruption cases involving public funds and hold senior officials accountable.
