Court Sentences Terrorism Convicts to 20 Years, Life Terms

On Tuesday, the Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced multiple defendants convicted of terrorism-related offenses to prison terms ranging from 20 years to life imprisonment. The sentences were handed down by a panel of judges, including Justice Binta Nyako, Emeka Nwite, and Obiora Egwuatu.

The Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, led the prosecution team, which informed the court that the minimum sentence for terrorism-related offenses is 20 years, while the maximum penalty is life imprisonment. The court ordered that the sentences commence from the date of the defendants' arrest.

The convicts had pleaded guilty to various charges, including receiving training to handle AK-47 rifles and providing support to the proscribed terrorist organization ISWAP. The mass trial of these suspects took place in Kainji, Niger, before being relocated to Abuja due to ongoing court sessions during the Easter vacation.
