Court Halts Governor Soludo's Onitsha Market Demolition

The Anambra State High Court has issued an order preventing Governor Charles Soludo from proceeding with the demolition of Onitsha market. This decision follows Soludo's announcement to clear the market, which he described as in a deplorable state, during a recent meeting with community leaders.

The court's ruling, delivered by Justice J. Nweze, urged all parties to maintain the status quo until a substantive hearing scheduled for March 16 of the current year.

Traders have expressed fears that the demolition would inflict severe hardship and financial loss, accusing the governor of attempting to confiscate shops for personal gain. Additionally, the Unit Igbo Elder Council has appealed to Soludo to reconsider his approach and explore alternative solutions, such as relocating sections of the market rather than outright demolition.

Mr. Jude Nwafor, a resident trader, emphasized the need for the governor to avoid actions that could worsen the fragile security situation in the state.
