Anambra Governor Soludo Shuts Onitsha Market Over Sit-At-Home Defiance

Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has taken the drastic step of closing Onitsha main market for one week following traders' defiance of the sit-at-home order. Despite repeated assurances and enhanced security measures, traders chose to keep their stalls locked, prompting the governor to enforce the closure to prevent economic sabotage and ensure public safety.

The closure will be extended if traders do not comply with the directive. The governor's action is part of broader efforts to control the economic life in the South-East region and abolish the sit-at-home order.

The state government had earlier directed traders to resume normal activities as part of economic stabilization efforts. Additionally, the state government has begun pro-rata salary payments to workers to mitigate the impact of the sit-at-home order.

The closure of Onitsha market underscores the ongoing struggle to restore economic activities and public safety in Anambra State.
