Court Halts Inquest into Chimamanda Adichie's Son's Death

The coroners' court in Lagos has suspended the inquest into the death of 21-month-old Master Nkanu Adichie Eseg, son of renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, until a judicial review is resolved. The adjournment was ordered by Magistrate Atinuk Adetunji, with the next hearing set for October 8, 2026.

The counsel for Euracar Multi-Specialist Hospital, Prof. Taiwo Osipitan, informed the court that the hospital is challenging the jurisdiction of the coroner's court, arguing that the child's body was allegedly cremated, which raises questions about the legality of the inquest process.

The Lagos State Attorney General's office, represented by Adebola Araba, has yet to receive a copy of the enrolment order. Kemi Pinheiro SAN, representing the deceased's family, disclosed that four witness statements have been filed, including those from the child's father, Dr.

Ivara Eseg, and medical experts. Pinheiro emphasized the family's desire for an open inquest, asserting that there is nothing to hide.
