Father Sentenced to 24 Years for Raping Daughters

Okon Jimmi Ama, a 51-year-old commercial driver and mechanic, was sentenced to a total of 24 years in prison by the Akwa Ibom State High Court in Uyo, presided over by Justice Winifred Effiong. The conviction followed a 10-year legal battle regarding the repeated rape and molestation of his two biological daughters, aged 13 and 16, which occurred from 2015.

Evidence presented during the trial revealed that Ama subjected his daughters to severe abuse, including physical violence and sexual assault, and disposed of evidence in a pit toilet. The court's ruling included a seven-year sentence for one count of incest, three years for another count of incest, 14 years for rape, and additional time for bodily harm, with the sentences running concurrently.

Prosecuting counsel Ofonim Idio described the judgment as a strong statement against sexual abuse victims in the state.
