SDP Chair Gabam: Crises Strengthen Political Parties

On Tuesday, Gabam, the Chair of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), stated that crises within political parties do not weaken them but rather help to strengthen their structures. He acknowledged that dissatisfaction is inevitable in politics and emphasized the importance of focusing on moving the party forward, especially with the upcoming elections in 2027.

Gabam dismissed claims regarding the leadership of the SDP, specifically addressing allegations against former SDP National Chairman Shehu Umar Abubakar, asserting that there is no court order recognizing his leadership. He defended the judiciary, describing an appellate court judgment as thorough and deserving of credit.

Gabam noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recognized the leadership based on the court's appeal ruling, which overturned a previous judgment by Justice Nwite due to lack of jurisdiction. He warned that the political system in Nigeria could suffer if tensions are allowed to escalate unchecked and highlighted the challenges posed by the amended electoral act on political parties.
