Cross River Faces Increased Wildlife Poaching Threat

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has raised concerns about a resurgence in wildlife poaching and trafficking in Cross River State. NESREA Director Raymond Anunobi emphasized the growing threat posed by wildlife crime, which requires stronger enforcement of conservation laws and greater judicial awareness.

A workshop funded by the European Union was organized to enhance the capacity of judicial officers in handling environmental cases. Anunobi highlighted the importance of recognizing the realities of wildlife crime and the need for effective application of the law.

Chief Superintendent Demben Aferekp of the Nigerian Immigration Service noted the critical role of immigration officers in preventing cross-border wildlife trafficking. Joseph Ntui described wildlife crime as a major transnational crime linked to money laundering and insecurity.

Joseph Bassei from the Cross River State High Court underscored the importance of enforcing wildlife protection laws to safeguard biodiversity and ensure justice in wildlife crime cases.
