Cross River State Commits to Reducing Maternal Deaths

On Thursday, during the launch of a week-long awareness campaign on preeclampsia organized by the state chapter of the Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON), Dr. Henri Egb Ayuk, the Commissioner for Health in Cross River State, reiterated the state's commitment to fighting maternal and neonatal deaths.

He highlighted that preeclampsia, a condition characterized by high blood pressure and organ dysfunction during pregnancy, is a significant contributor to these deaths. Dr.

Ayuk stated that the administration led by Governor Bassey Otu is determined to safeguard the lives of mothers and newborns by sustaining investments in the healthcare sector. He noted that maternal health is a central pillar of the state's agenda and emphasized the need for comprehensive reforms to revitalize health facilities, strengthen service delivery, and ensure quality healthcare access for women across the state.

Dr. Ayuk also mentioned the necessity for a robust regulatory system and modern healthcare infrastructure to improve obstetric emergency management across the 18 local government areas.
