Tinubu Urged to Resolve Cross River, Akwa Ibom Oil Dispute

The conflict between Cross River State and Akwa Ibom State over the ownership of 76 oil wells has intensified, prompting a call for intervention from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This dispute dates back to the creation of the states in 1987 and has been exacerbated by political and economic interests surrounding oil resources.

The Supreme Court of Nigeria ruled in 2012 that the 76 oil wells belong to Akwa Ibom, a decision that Cross River State disputes, claiming misinformation was presented to the court. Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom has advised against emotional responses, while Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River argues that the state is not landlocked and insists on the validity of their claims.

The situation is further complicated by the historical loss of the Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon, which has affected Cross River's eligibility for oil revenue. The need for a peaceful resolution is critical to prevent further conflict.
